Florence is The City of the Renaissance. Because the Medici Family were wealthy art patrons it contains some of the greatest artwork of all time. During our tour orientation I scheduled a side trip to visit the Verrazzano Winery. Also I would visit the Uffizi Art Museum and Michelangelo’s David the next day with a different tour group. I asked Charlie “are you going to visit David tomorrow?”. Charlie replied “David who?”. The guide thought this was hysterical. To be in Florence and not know that David referred to the 17 foot tall marble statue of David slaying Goliath from the Bible amounted to heresy. Charlie and I decided that we would meet in Palazzo Vacchio about three o’clock by the replica statue of David. There were so many large statues of nude males in the square he could not figure out which one was David so he just found a nice open-air café and drank wine. Charlie’s good sense of humor gave him a good story to tell. I used one of the open horse carriages for my point of interest in the painting and you have to look carefully to spot David. I asked the guide why the male nude statues in the city of Rome had Fig Leafs covering their boy parts and Florence did not? Simple Florence was much more sophisticated!
