The Willow with its shadows are the dominant feature of this painting. It controls the light and how it’s distributed. Willows say “we are just lazy droopy happy trees that enjoy a soft summer breeze.” Willows are willing to spruce up in softer shades of yellow and green for the fall. It is always politically correct to love a Willow. It must be noted that Monet’s son and heir destroyed Monet’s original garden. The garden as it now stands is a restored version. What possesses a child to want to desecrate something his father loved so much?! Thank goodness he didn’t change the lovely kitchen in Monet’s house. I had to have one of the beautiful blue and white tiles sold in the gift shop. The blue-and-white was set off by accents of yellow to give the room tranquility and liveliness. If ever you are in France Monet’s Garden is a must-see.
