Monet’s Garden Lilly Pond #5

This lily pond with a garden in the background could have easily become two paintings on a single canvas. The shadows on the pond connect the water with the trees and shrubs and the rest of the painting. It was hard for me to keep the line of the shore loose and suggestive. When I was young like all inexperienced artists I thought painting like the impressionists was easy. It’s taken me 60 years to learn that free and loose doesn’t mean sloppy and to develop my own style.
