Magnolias & Blue Tea Pot with Crane
24″ x 30″
Oil on canvas
Magnolia’s make a great flower to paint. Sometimes I will add extra flowers or buds to my painting that are not in my original Set-up photograph. Magnolia’s have large shiny green leaves that turn a lovely rust color as they age. They are easy to add or rearrange in my paintings. Even though I plan my paintings in my drawing I am always ready to change a painting if the small sketch does not translate onto a large canvas. Normally I do not layout black paint from the tube on my paint palate. I mix my black paint using Burnt Umber, Cobalt Violet (purple) and a blue. I shade my Magnolia petals with Cerullan Blue and Cobalt Violet.
