Kansas is the sunflower State. In September of 2021 my daughter and I went to a sunflower farm that was open to the public. We were prepared and collected about 20 sunflowers to photograph. Sunflowers are a hardy bloom and are grown commercially in large fields for their seeds. Sunflowers follow the sun. In the morning they face east, at noon they are flat facing the sky and in the afternoon they face west. As prepared as we were for this trip we forgot our bucket. So we made due with a large cooler bag which I kept in my car. Several people commented on this and even wanted to photograph the sunflowers in the bag. When I got home I also photographed the sunflowers in the bag. I decided to use this composition in a painting after Putin invaded Ukraine. The sunflower is the national flower of Ukraine.
Normally I do not date my paintings. Stars, Stripes and Sunflowers is dedicated it to my granddaughter Lindsay.
