Critters with Magnolias
24″ x 20″
Print of Oil on canvas
This painting is called Critters with Magnolias. Surrealist is the best description of this painting. Magnolia trees are the flower of the South. Magnolia trees are easy maintenance free and fast growing. I have five Magnolia trees in my yard. Magnolias are one of the oldest flowering trees. They even predate the honeybees. Botanists and environmentalists enjoy debating their taxonomy.
Surreal- the combination of all these fun animals posed with a flower arrangement is not a natural setting making it Surreal. I love nature. Living where I see these creatures on a daily basis is one of the greatest joys in my life. It is so much fun trying to arrange these different elements into one painting. Animal, Vegetable and Mineral. The little wild rabbit (Fang) was saved when dogs destroy the nest. Fang was hand raised then returned to the wild. All of the critters are individuals that I had personally photographed or collected. The tree frogs, praying mantis, spiders and lizards visit me on my screened porch. None of the creatures are ever harmed. The Anole lizard which the locals call chameleons because they can change from green to gray color. The males love to display their neck Dewlaps to court their lady loves. When a lizard on my porch floor was being harassed by my Sadie and Tillie. I called them off. The lizard just strutted slowly away wagging its tail defiantly like a cat.
