Lady of Cartagena
30″ x 24″
Oil on canvas
Who could pass up a chance to say that they had been to South America even if it’s just a half a day with a herd of people? Not me! When we went ashore at Cartagena, Colombia, South America the first drop off point was the Fortress of San Felipe De Borgia. This old historical fort was of no interest to me, but the people around it were. Silly me, forgot my sun glasses and had to pay 20 bucks for a pair of dollar store sunglasses. Then I was approached by this boldly dressed fun lady, Her modeling fee 1 American dollar. A dollar may seem insignificant to a tourist, but in a third world country a US dollar carries much more value. I sure got my money’s worth. I decided to place her in the background of another setting of that same day. I was lucky the shadows were exactly the same. I did struggle with the buildings in the background and had to repaint the background people because the scale was wrong. I loved her spunky colorful personality and I hope I captured it in this painting. It was a fun day I bought a T-shirt and a little 3 inch donkey.
